CONSTRUCTION UPDATES in reverse chronological order

Square 39/May 15, 2013:  Installation of piping, duct work, and conduit  in the walls and ceilings is progressing on floors B2 through L7. Masonry walls are in progress on floors L5 through L7. Elevator columns and beams are being installed. Framing is in progress on floors B1 through L1. Installation of exterior wall panels on the west elevation will complete this week. PEPCO installation of the primary service will start mid May.

Square 39/May 1, 2013:  The roof and penthouse roof elevated slabs have been poured. Installation of piping, duct work, and conduit installation in the walls and ceilings is progressing on floors B2 through L4. Masonry walls are in progress on floors L1 and L4. Elevator columns and beams are being installed.  Framing of the electrical rooms are in progress. Installation of exterior wall panels on the west elevation is in progress. 

Square 39/April 15, 2013:  The first half of the roof elevated slab has been poured. This marks the “topping out” of the construction site when the construction of the structure reaches its highest point.  Faculty, administrators, construction staff, and CampaignGW representatives gathered on April 10 to recognize this construction milestone. 

Piping, duct work, and conduit installation in the walls and ceilings are in progress on floors B2, B1, and L1. Masonry walls are in progress on floors B1 and B2. The equipment platform on floor B2 is complete. Elevator columns and beams are being installed.  Framing of the electrical rooms is in progress. Installation of exterior wall panels on the west elevation is in progress. 

Square 39/April 9, 2013: Installation of the Level 7 floor slab is complete. Framing for the roof elevated slab is complete. The installation of  in-slab conduit and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sleeves continues. The roof slab will be poured on the tenth of April. The installation of the PEPCO duct banks and vaults are complete. Piping, ductwork, and conduit installation in the walls and ceilings are in progress on B2 Level. Masonry walls are in progress on B1 and B2 Levels. The equipment platform on B2 is in progress. Framing of the electrical rooms is in progress on Floors 1 and 2. Exterior wall panels will start next week.

Square 39/March 25, 2013: Installation of the Level 6 floor slab is complete. Framing for the 7th elevated slab continues as does installation of in-slab conduit and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sleeves.  The installation of the PEPCO duct banks are in progress. Vaults have been set. Piping and ductwork as well as conduit installation in the walls and ceilings are in progress on B2 level. Masonry walls are in progress on B1 level.

Square 39/March 1, 2013:Installation of the Level 4 and 5 columns and elevated slabs continues as does installation of in-slab conduit and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sleeves. Level 4 elevated slab was completed this week. Level 5 form work is in progress. The installation of the PEPCO duct banks are in progress.  Piping, B2 ductwork, and conduit installation in the walls and ceilings are in Progress. B2 level masonry walls are in progress.

Square 39/February 21, 2013: Current work includes:  installation of the Level 3 & 4 columns and elevated slabs. Installation continues of in-slab conduit and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sleeves. Level 3 elevated slab will be completed this week. Level 4 form work is in progress. The installation of the PEPCO Vaults will start next week.  Piping, ductwork, and conduit installation in the walls and ceilings will begin on B2 starting next week.

Square 39/January 31, 2013: Current work includes:  installation of the Level B1, 1, and 2 columns and elevated slabs. Installation continues of in-slab conduit and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sleeves. Level B1 elevated slab will be completed this week. Level 2 concrete slab installation will start next week.
Square 39/January 7, 2013: Current work includes:  installation of the Level B1 elevated slab; construction of interior columns on Levels B1 to 1, and; installation of in-slab conduit and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sleeves. Installation of concrete footings, slab on-grade, and construction of columns on Levels B1 and B2 are complete. 

Square 39/December 19, 2012: Recognizing the importance of the upcoming December 12-21 Final Exams period, the university is extending the prohibition on construction activities likely to be exceptionally noisy to 9:00am on weekdays at the sites for all of GW’s major  construction projects, including the Science and Engineering Hall site. Workers can work from 7–9:00am during this time, but the work may not include activities that are defined here – regular work may commence after 9:00 a.m.  Also, work will not occur at these sites on Saturday December 15, 2012.

Concrete footings will be complete this week. Foundation walls, and waterproofing are in progress. Foundation drainage installation and electrical work under-slab are in progress. The slab on grade is 70% complete. Framing and prep-work for the first section of elevated slab is in progress and will be poured this week. 

Unless otherwise needed, the next project update for this site will be posted the first week of January 2013.

Square 39/December 1, 2012: Concrete footings, foundation walls, and waterproofing are in progress. Foundation drainage installation and electrical workunder-slab have begun.  In early December the lower level slab will begin to be poured. 

Square 39/November 15, 2012:  Concrete footings, foundation walls, and waterproofing are in progress. The lower level underslab plumbing is complete. Construction will not occur on Thursday, November 22nd for Thanksgiving.  

Square 39/November 1, 2012:  Excavation is complete. Concrete footings, waterproofing, and under slab plumbing are in progress. The tower crane was installed in late October.

Square 39/October 15, 2012:  Controlled blasting activities have completed.  Excavation will continue through October.  Concrete footings are in progress. The tower crane was installed on Saturday, October 13th. Waterproofing operations will begin this week. Initial plumbing work will begin next week. 

Square 39/October 1, 2012:  Controlled blasting activities began September 19, 2012 and will continue into early October.  During this time, excavation continues as rock is removed from the blasting areas. Concrete work will begin in early October. The tower crane will likely be installed in mid-October, pending final permits.
Square 39/September 15, 2012: As part of the excavation required for construction of the new building for GW’s School of Public Health and Health Services, twice-daily controlled blasting activities are planned for weekdays beginning as soon as Sept. 17 and will continue for approximately three weeks. The extent and duration of the blasting will depend on the amount of rock at the site – located between K and 24th streets, Washington Circle and New Hampshire Avenue— as well as other site and field conditions. Square 39/September 4, 2012:  Tieback installation is expected to complete the week of September 10th. Excavation, fill export, and lagging installation is expected to continue through September.Fractured rock is currently beingremoved with mechanical equipment. Excavation has reached an elevation of 35 feet and will continue until an elevation of 21 feet.  

Square 39/August 15, 2012: Excavation, fill export, and lagging/tie-back installation is expected to continue through August. 

Square 39/August 1, 2012: The removal of the existing foundation is complete. Excavation, fill export, and lagging/tie-back installation are in progress. This phase of construction will continue through August.   

Square 39/July 16, 2012: The installation of piles is complete and the drill rig has been removed from the site. The removal of the existing foundation is in progress. Excavation, fill export, and lagging are in progress and will continue through August. Tie-back installation will start the week of July 23rd. 

Square 39/July 02, 2012:
Work will not occur on Wednesday July 4 in observance of Independence Day.  The razing of the building is complete. Excavation will start the 9th of July.This work will continue through August.

Square 39/June 12, 2012: The razing of the building is complete. We will start drilling piles on 6/14. This work will continue through the first week in August.

Square 39/May 31, 2012:  Raze of building began on May 15th and is expected to continue through June 4. The drilling of the piles is anticipated to begin week of June 3.

Square 39/May 14, 2012: Interior demo and abatement is completed the week of May 6th. Utility service has been disconnected. Raze permit has been received. Raze of building began on May 15th and is expected to continue over the next three of weeks.

Square 39/April 27, 2012: Interior asbestos abatement and exterior limestone removal began in late March and will continue until completion anticipated which is expected to occur next week. Exterior limestone has been removed for possible future reuse in the new School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) building. Some trees have been removed as part of site preparations. Interior demolition continues in advance of the raze of the building.
